The long and winding road.... to the Swedish breakfast table

Tonight we held our first (of what we hope will be many) Seasonal Suppers at Blenkingska nation. Many thanks to the excellent pub chefs for the deliciously cooked seasonal food. The recipes will be available on this blog shortly.

On the table we had some interesting facts about autumnal foods (look out for more facts on spring, summer & winter produce coming soon!), one of which raised some further questions.

We stated that a study found that the food miles for a typical Swedish breakfast was 24,000 miles (or the circumference of the equator!). The original study was conducted in 1993 by F. Gunter on the diminishing supplies of natural phospherous in agricultural land as a result of globalisation of our food system. The original study can be found here at page 267.

Whilst quite interesting, the report is a little abstract and does not have a huge connection to Swedish food miles, focusing instead on phospherous in the agricultural industry. I must confess our "fact" actually came from a study on the food system of Iowa (which I think provides more interesting reading on the topic of food miles).
